EPA Compliance

LocomotiveIn 1998, under the Federal Clean Air Act, EPA promulgated exhaust emission standards for locomotive diesel engines. The primary focus of this rule is the reduction of oxides of nitrogen, (NOx), but all emission constituents have limits. All existing Line Haul locomotives built from 1973 through 2001, at the time of remanufacturing must be made compliant with Tier 0 emission standards, (9.5 gms NOx). All new Line Haul locomotives built from 2002 through 2004 must meet Tier 1 limits, (7.4 gms NOx) and all new Line Haul units built in 2005 and after must meet Tier 2, (5.5 gms NOx). The complete locomotive rule and all Tier limits for both Line Haul and Switcher locomotives can be found at www.epa.gov/oms/locomotv.htm.

Teleflex EcoTrans answers the call with the K9® locomotive Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). The APU is a part of a locomotive Tier 0 package certified to meet EPA's 1997 locomotive rule and conform with the EPA's idle reduction strategy. This assists in bringing the locomotive into compliance without the significant fuel penalty associated with other emission reduction kits.

The K9® system can also be used as the foundation for other locomotive system building blocks, such as air conditioning, 120/240VDC, battery saver and cab accessories.
